I know there are probably very few of you on here who like the current Mercedes SL. It could be argued that it is the very antithesis of the enthusiast’s sports car. But don’t forget, the car your dentist parks outside the country club can be ordered with a 6.0L biturbo V12 chucking out just under 740lbs/ft of torque. It’s a wonder there are still any MDs left.

And yet, we lose our shit over the E63 wagon. Such is life in Oppo.

I love it, long live any and all v12 engines! Especially coupes and roadsters!

I don’t mind the SL, I just like the SLK is better.

Kinja'd!!!

I don't know about you, but if I had to be forced to drive a modern German car for the rest of my life, I wouldn't mind taking one of those.

it’s not bad - but it’s got that really weird trunk line into the rear quarters that mess it up...

I love the SL63/65. Apparently, both are great to drive, and they’re pretty quick. It’s not really made to be a track car, but rather a high-speed touring car.

I'd rather have a CL only because I'm not a fan of convertibles

I don’t care for the styling of the current gen. The last good looking SL’s were these:

I couldn’t be any sort of medical professional. I have neither the stomach nor the steadiness of hand.

Someday I’ll own something with a V12.

The SLK seems to get just as much hate on here. An extreme example:

Then again, that was this guy’s third or fourth time popping up and getting chased off Oppo, so maybe he doesn’t count.

Indeed. And yes, I would imagine that even a Holiday Inn with that engine would be pretty quick. Case in point, the G65.

The CL/ S Coupe are real stunners. Given the choice between the SL65 and an S65 coupe, I’d take the S65.

My SL, going on 18 years old, did 0-60 in 3.7 seconds when new. Still no slouch at all. Embarrasses plenty of new cars easily.

The SL class is about luxury with power, not luxury or power. A simple tune for the SL65 AMG turns it into even more of a monster. Most people are too busy gawking at other cars to realize the SL in the corner would hang it out to dry every day, and twice on Sunday.

And to put the icing on the cake, with the right budget, DD’ing one is perfectly within reason as long as you have gas money. Theyre probably more reliable and faster than most of the italians. Until Pagani shows up, because thats similar drivetrains right there.

They are much better than the general enthusiast public seems to realize.

3.7 second? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but this thing only manages it in 3.9. I know there’s a big weight difference, but are you sure it wasn’t 4.7?

I totally get the appeal of a really fast, really comfy convertible. I just don’t get how they made it look so bad. Its design just doesnt work, which is even worse considering they know how to make very pretty things.

Hopefully we get a facelift like, tomorrow. SL’s always seem to last a decade so I'm not holding my breath for an all new one.

Unpopular opinion: the current SL is absolutely gorgeous. I legitimately think it's one of the best looking new cars out there, but I also think the Panamera is a good looking car too.

Honestly I prefer the SL550 to the AMG versions. The AMGs have too many vents and just ruin the design for me.

You’ll likely be seeing an entirely new one in 2017 along with the new SLC (return of the SLK). The current gen started with the 2012 release and was facelifted once. There also might be a CLE in the works to compete with the 4 GC and the A5 Sportback.
